Entertainment - a means of forgetting?

What is entertainment? Apart from being a huge, multi-faceted, multi-billion dollar industry what is it? Things that are entertaining used to be called past-times because that's what they do - pass time. Yet everyone says "Life's short" so can we really afford just to pass time? Doesn't every moment count?

It's true that most people can't be 100% focused and concentrate on important things for long stretches of time. We all need to take a break and entertainment is one device to allow the mind to rest. But have we become addicted to entertainment to the exclusion of thinking deeply about things? Is entertainment a means of forgetting? Forgetting why we are here? What we are supposed to be doing? Who needs our help? How we can change ourselves and our world for the better?

What do you think? Are we entertainment junkies? Are we copping out on our responsibilities as human beings? Just a thought...

Nice post Munaiba! I was

Nice post Munaiba! I was thinking about this just the other day ;) How much time we waste with tv, movies, internet, etc. Thinking back to our time in brazil, where there was no tv, crappy internet and no media - its the time that we felt most relaxed and at ease!

I even started writing down alternatives to the telly - like reading, chatting with a friend, cooking, walking (or any other form of excercise), etc. Essentially anything that gets your mind & or body active :)

I guess at the end of the day, as you say - its all about balance :)

Hope you have an inspiring weekend!!! :)

Congrats Obama: Lets do it together!

After 8 long years of Bush - a fresh start. Let's seize this historic moment to send a flood of global messages to Obama. Our message and the number of signers, as well as all our personal messages, will be displayed on a giant wall in the heart of Washington DC. Over the next 48 hours, the wall could become a focal point for US media reporting on global reactions to the Obama win. A massive global response will help make this a major moment of unity and reconciliation between the US and the world. Let's get to a million!
