Election time in South Africa - Avaaz.org taking action!

As we approach the election, there are worrying signs that human rights, democracy and the rule of law are under threat.

As politicians vie to attract the South African people's votes before the April 22 election, this is our chance to tell our leaders that we want commitments from them to uphold the principles that underpin our country.

Sign the Avaaz.org petition and they will deliver it to the political parties and publicize their responses before we go to the polls.

To South Africa’s electoral candidates:

"We, the people of South Africa, demand an accountable government! Corruption should be exiled from public life, politicians must uphold the constitution and the rule of law, essential services must be provided to all our communities, and human rights should be the light that guides our international relations. We challenge you to commit publicly to these principles."

Congrats Obama: Lets do it together!

After 8 long years of Bush - a fresh start. Let's seize this historic moment to send a flood of global messages to Obama. Our message and the number of signers, as well as all our personal messages, will be displayed on a giant wall in the heart of Washington DC. Over the next 48 hours, the wall could become a focal point for US media reporting on global reactions to the Obama win. A massive global response will help make this a major moment of unity and reconciliation between the US and the world. Let's get to a million!
